Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT:
5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions
with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions
with
equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or
difference of fractions with like denominators.
The first step for combing (either adding or subtracting) "unlike" fractions, is to multiply one or both of the fractions by a value of 1 to make the denominators equal as in the example below, and then add or subtract the "like" fractions. (Note: Unlike fractions have different denominators , bottom numbers, and like fractions have the same denominator.)
